“The continuing spread of COVID-19 across Michigan and the tragic loss of life makes extending Governor Whitmer’s emergency and disaster declarations both necessary and prudent to protect the health, welfare and safety of Michiganders. Governor Whitmer and her administration must have the ability to adapt to this continually evolving public health crisis with both bipartisan and bicameral engagement and support.

I am deeply concerned by statements made by the Republican leadership suggesting they plan to call the House and Senate back into session to do anything less than what Governor Whitmer and public health experts have advised us is necessary to combat this deadly pandemic. As Speaker Chatfield has said on more than one occasion, the Governor ‘remains in the best position to make these decisions.’ He was right when he said that and the Legislature should stand beside her with bipartisan support for the requested 70-day extension.”
