Resolution expresses appreciation for the historical, cultural and religious importance of the holiday

LANSING — State Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy) introduced a resolution today to recognize the historical, cultural and religious significance of the festival of Diwali in Michigan. Falling on Sunday, Oct. 27 this year, Diwali is a holy celebration observed by more than 1 billion people throughout the world, making the festival one of the largest, most significant religious observances worldwide. The holiday is observed by Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities, and holds many different interpretations and meanings based on this.

“Diwali means so much to so many people, not only in India, but across the world,” said Kuppa. “As a celebration of light in a world that can often seem so dark, this holiday is a perfect reminder to all of us of the importance of hope and respect for each other, regardless of our personal beliefs. I’m proud to have introduced this resolution to recognize the significance of Diwali in my district and for Michiganders across our state.”

While Diwali is celebrated in many different ways based on religious or cultural customs, all recognize the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and love over hate. Celebrations also heavily feature clay oil lamps, strings of lights, firework displays and more.
