“The op-ed from Judge Rhodes, published in the Detroit Free Press, speaks for the many, often voiceless, Detroit teachers, parents, students and administrators, and I applaud his support for the new DPSCD. As I have stated before, the new legislation passed earlier this year created a separate district which now must not only be judged by new standards, but must be given the proper amount of time — per the SROs rules — to operate before schools within it can be closed. The SRO has yet to live up to its purpose of truly ‘reforming’ districts, but instead emulates Gov. Rick Snyder’s failed plan to run this state like a business. We can no longer afford to treat Detroit’s children, or their education, like a financial commodity. It is time this state got back to the business of truly supporting and providing for its kids.”
