Legislative Update
State Budget
With just hours to spare, the Republican-led Legislature presented Gov. Whitmer with 16 budgets for her review. The last few weeks of budget processes and negotiations have been nothing short of a rollercoaster, but House Democrats remained committed to the things that matter most to you and our community. We had some important wins—like the inclusion of the $120 million for water cleanup in the EGLE budget—and more than a few losses. At the end of the day, these budgets could have been a lot better. It’s no wonder that upon reviewing the budgets, Gov. Whitmer exercised her right to line-item veto parts that were simply not up to par and she should be commended for that. The fight is not over, and we welcome our Republican colleagues back to the negotiating table to join us in that conversation. It’s time to put partisanship aside and deliver real solutions.
