Dear Friends,
Hello, and welcome to my e-newsletter. I would like to take this moment to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you in the 95th House District and to act as your voice in the Capitol. This issue of my e-newsletter will provide you an update on some of the more contentious bills making their way through the Legislature during the final month of session, including:
- Inauguration of New Executive Administration
- 100th Legislature to Begin in 2019
- Changes to Marijuana Laws
- “Bringing Back the Ice” at Hoyt Park
As your representative, I am most effective at my job when acting on your input, and I encourage you to reach out to me and my staff with any questions, comments or concerns you may have about issues in the district or legislation that will impact our state. You can contact me toll-free at (855) 347-8095, by email at vanessaguerra@house.mi.gov or through my website, guerra.housedems.com. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your commitment to the community we both call home.
Inauguration of New Executive Administration
On Tuesday, Jan. 1, a new executive administration was sworn in to lead Michigan for the next four years. I have the utmost confidence that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Attorney General Dana Nessel will serve our working families honorably, and I could not be more excited to partner with them on legislative issues to make sure all Michiganders can count on their government to serve them.
100th Legislature to Begin in 2019
I am incredibly proud to begin serving my third term in the 100th Legislature for the 2019-2020 session. Our new Legislature will officially convene on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at noon, and new representatives and senators will be sworn in that day. Changes to Marijuana Laws
Adult recreational marijuana use became legal in Michigan on Dec. 6, 2018, and since then the state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has been working through the technical aspects associated with implementing the law. Below are some helpful tips for you to be aware of concerning how the new law will work:
- An adult may possess up to 2.5 ounces, have 10 ounces at home in a locked container and up to 12 plants and their clippings.
- In addition to allowing an individual who is 21 years or older to possess, use, consume, purchase, transport, or process 2.5 ounces or less, the law allows an individual to give 2.5 ounces or less to another individual who is 21 years or older, so long as it is free, not advertised or promoted to the public.
- By Dec. 6, 2019 — one year after the effective date of the law — the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs will begin accepting applications for specific entities, including a class A grower license, microbusiness license, and entities already licensed under the Medical Marijuana Facilities Licensing Act and safety compliance facilities.
