DETROIT, Mich., April 21, 2020 — State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) organized the donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) today for the 6th and 8th precincts of the Detroit Police Department. In addition, Gay-Dagnogo secured the donation of lunch by Switch, served by local restaurant Steve’s Soul Food, along with beverages donated by Public Affairs Association for both precincts.
“It’s difficult to put into words the vast impacts COVID-19 has had on Detroit’s vibrant community and the thousands of families who call it home,” said Gay-Dagnogo. “But day-in and day-out, our dedicated public servants with the Detroit Police Department are on the front-line, ready to continue their important work to protect the health and safety of our city while putting themselves at risk in the process. I’m honored to have been able to secure these donations to show our unwavering support for their work and will keep fighting to see these brave heroes receive the hazard pay they rightly deserve.”
Wayne County has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, accounting for over one-third of cases in the state. The Detroit Police Department employs roughly 2,800 people, with at least 180 testing positive for the virus and more than 1,000 being quarantined at some point throughout the ongoing pandemic, making access to adequate PPE imperative for the Department’s ability to continue protecting and serving the community. Gay-Dagnogo was joined by state Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit), state Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit), and DPD Commissioners Daryl Brown and William Davis.
