KALAMAZOO, Mich., Jan. 26, 2021 — The Michigan Department of Transportation announced this week that the City of Kalamazoo has been awarded a $375,000 Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category F grant for Fiscal Year 2022 to cover the construction costs and repair of Miller Road. Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) and Rep. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo) both welcomed the news and noted the importance of this project.
“I am thrilled to see these state grant dollars awarded to the City of Kalamazoo for needed repairs on Miller Road,” said McCann. “Kalamazoo County residents and businesses have made it clear that fixing our crumbling roads and infrastructure is a top priority. Employers along Miller Road and throughout our state rely on quality roads to get their products to market. I will continue to partner with, and support, efforts in the legislature to fix our roads and strengthen our infrastructure.”
The City of Kalamazoo will mill and resurface Miller Road, a major east-west roadway, from Emerald Drive to S. Sprinkle Road. The road serves several large industrial and businesses and provides access (via Sprinkle Road) to I-94, I-94 Business, M-96, and M-43. Years of heavy industrial and commercial use has contributed to the deterioration of the roadway and the pavement is nearing the end of its operational life.
“Thank you to the Kalamazoo residents who advocated for Miller Road for a number of years,” said Rogers. “I’m pleased to hear about this new funding for a major thoroughfare and appreciate both MDOT and the City of Kalamazoo for their investments. I especially applaud the ADA enhancements that will make this road more accessible for all users.”
Additional work includes curb and gutter replacement and ADA ramp upgrades at intersections. The total cost of construction is $775,575, with $375,000 in Category F funds and $400,575 in matching funds from the City of Kalamazoo.
Enacted in 1987 and reauthorized in 1993, the TEDF helps finance highway, road and street projects that are critical to the movement of people and products, and getting workers to their jobs, materials to growers and manufacturers, and finished goods to consumers. TEDF Category F grants are competitive grants made to eligible road agencies to preserve and/or expand all-season road networks within the urban areas of rural counties.
