Dear Neighbor,
Here is some information that I hope you will find helpful, including some updates on the state’s efforts to address COVID-19 as well as other news from your state government.
COVID-19 Vaccinations Begin for Those Over 65, Some Essential Workers
Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, individuals over the age of 65 and some essential frontline workers became eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The State of Michigan is aiming to vaccinate 70 percent of Michigan residents age 16 and older by the end of 2021. More information on the COVID-19 vaccine in Michigan can be found at Michigan.gov/COVIDvaccine.
Individuals in Ingham County Can Pre-Register for COVID-19 Vaccine
Individuals who live or work in Ingham County can pre-register for the vaccine with the county health department, and they’ll be notified when vaccines are open to their priority group. You can find out more information and pre-register by clicking here. Many health departments across the state, including the Ingham County Health Department, report that they have received a limited number of vaccine doses. Therefore, health departments will be carefully screening to ensure that the limited number of doses go to those who most need them based on the risk of exposure and risk of death.
State Sets Goal for Every School to Offer In-Person Learning by March 1
On Friday, Gov. Whitmer announced the state’s goal of having every school in the state offer an in-person learning option by March 1, 2021. State medical experts and epidemiologists believe that schools can create a safe learning and work environment if everyone wears a mask and follows the necessary safety protocols. Additionally, a large segment of the education workforce is expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccine within the next month. While this March 1 deadline is strongly encouraged, school districts are not required by the state to return to an in-person option.
101st Legislative Session Begins Wednesday
Wednesday, Jan. 13 marks the beginning of the 101st session of the Michigan Legislature. I look forward to continuing to work towards quality, affordable health care for everyone; access to clean drinking water for all, regardless of income; more integrity in our government; and greater stability and support for working families as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
State of the State to be Given Online on Jan. 27
The governor’s State of the State Address will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. Traditionally, this speech has been given in the House Chambers during a joint session of the Legislature. However, ongoing concerns about spreading COVID-19 led to Gov. Whitmer’s decision to give a virtual address. Information on where the event can be streamed has not yet been announced, but I will be sure to keep you updated as the information becomes available.
While legislative offices remain closed to the public, my team and I are still providing responsive service as we work from home. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at (517) 373-0587 or by email at karahope@house.mi.gov if we can help.
