LANSING – State Representative Adam Zemke (D-Ann Arbor) was officially sworn in for his first term as state representative for the 55th District of the Michigan House of Representatives during a ceremony in the House Chamber today.
“As a graduate of Ann Arbor Public Schools and Michigan State University, I know how important education is to our children. The voters of the 55th District have told me time and time again that education is our No. 1 form of economic development,” Zemke said. “The University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College are vital to our local economy. That’s why improving our state’s education system is one of my top priorities as a legislator.”
Zemke represents part of the city of Ann Arbor, part of the city of Milan, and all of the townships of Ann Arbor, Pittsfield, York and Augusta.
House Assistant Clerk Rich Brown swore in the 51 Democratic members of the Michigan House in their oath of office in the constitutionally mandated event that kicked off the 2013-2014 legislative session.
“Michigan families are hurting. It’s my job as a legislator to help them,” Zemke said, pledging to work with his colleagues to put Michigan back to work. Zemke’s father, Frederick Zemke; stepmother, Lori Zemke; sister, Michelle Zemke; aunt, Jaime Lehto; and grandmother, Ann Lehto, joined the representative.
