State Representative Henry Yanez (D-Sterling Heights) today voted for House Bills 4037 and 4287, which will allow for a special veteran’s designation on driver’s licenses and state identification cards. The bills were reported out of the Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs and await being taken up by the full House.
“These bills make it easier for our veterans to take advantage of discounts and services without having to carry around their proof of military release or discharge,” said Yanez.”This is another way to expedite our veterans’ ability to access what is owed to them after they bravely served our country,”
HB 4037 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow individuals who are veterans of the armed forces to get a veteran’s designation, with the specific branch of the military reflected, on a veteran’s driver’s license on request. The Secretary of State will require proof of the individual’s veteran status before providing the designation required under the bill. The following documents would constitute proof of an individual’s status as a veteran:
-
A U.S. Department of Defense Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD214), or a correction to that form (DD215), for discharge in 1950 or after; or
-
A separation document or form issued by a branch or department of the United States armed services for discharge before 1950.
“An added benefit is that the Secretary of State will be able to maintain a better record of our veterans so information on veteran’s services and benefits can be easily disseminated,” continued Yanez. “I am hopeful and confident that these bills will be taken up soon by the full Legislature and receive overwhelming support.”
