LANSING, Mich., May 27, 2021 — Yesterday, state Reps. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy), Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck), Kelly Breen (D-Novi), and Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) introduced a four-bill legislative package that would establish the holidays of Diwali, Eid, Lunar New Year and Vaisakhi as official state holidays in Michigan.

Kuppa’s bill would recognize Diwali, which is one of the most widely-celebrated Indian American holidays and is observed by Michiganders of Hindu, Jain and Sikh faith.

“These bills would extend our recognition of Michiganders of Asian Pacific heritage beyond the month of May and allow us to recognize their cultural contributions in perpetuity,” Kuppa said.

Aiyash’s bill would recognize two important Islamic holidays, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.

“Many times school or work falls on the same day as Eid, and it really prevents people from being able to celebrate with their families,” Aiyash said. “Adopting Eid as a State holiday moves us in the direction to allow for more inclusive practices for students and employees. It’s time we are culturally aware and considerate of one of Michigan’s growing communities.”

Breen’s bill would recognize Lunar New Year, which is celebrated by many Michiganders of East Asian heritage. Koleszar’s bill would recognize Vaisakhi, which is a significant holy day for Sikhs and Hindus in Michigan and around the world.

All four bills were referred to the House Committee on Government Operations for further consideration.
