Friends and Neighbors, Here’s a look at what I’ve been doing this week at the Capitol and in the district. Capital Update On Monday, I attended Lansing’s 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration Luncheon put on by the Dr. Martin Luther King Commission of Mid-Michigan. Almost 2,000 people attended the luncheon, a record number for this event. Congressman John Lewis was scheduled to give the keynote address, but he was unable to make it due to his health. A number of other state leaders attended, and Andrew Aydin, one of Congressman Lewis’s aides, addressed attendees. Mr. Aydin co-authored the graphic novel trilogy, March, which tells the story of Congressman Lewis’s work with the Civil Rights Movement. Today, I went to Waverly Middle School to see what Communities in Schools is doing for students there. Students, teachers, and administrators talked about how CIS helps connect kids with everything from basic needs (food, clothing) to tutoring and extracurricular activities. This nonprofit organization helps improve attendance and graduation rates. They no longer serve schools in the 67th House District, but not for lack of need. District Update Please join me on Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the South Lansing Library for coffee and conversation. I will provide a legislative update and answer questions. This event is free and open to the public, so please stop by!
We are still taking submissions for our 67th House District Awards! If you know of a young person in the district who deserves to be recognized for going the extra mile to make our community a better place, please nominate them using the form here. If you own or know of a business in the 67th House District that deserves to be recognized for making our community a better place, please nominate them for recognition here.
