Friends and Neighbors,
Here’s a look at what I’ve been doing at the Capitol and in the district.
Capitol Update
Earlier this month, I co-sponsored two kinship caregiver bills. Grandparents are more frequently called upon to care for their grandchildren, but any adult can be a “kinship caregiver.” My husband and I became kinship caregivers four months after we got married when my 8-year-old niece and 3-year-old nephew moved in with us. We had a lot of questions and our share of challenges, but we figured it out as we went along. It would have been helpful to have resources like the ones these bills would create back when we were new caregivers.
On Tuesday, I met with members of Moms Demand Action, a grassroots movement working for public safety measures to protect people from gun violence. Most Michigan residents agree that common sense policies are needed to reduce gun violence. I enjoyed meeting with these passionate advocates. They want a safer Michigan for their kids and grandkids, and so do I.
My seatmate on the House floor, Rep. Leslie Love, broke new ground in the House on Wednesday. Her guests delivered the invocation with African prayer drums. It was a great way to conclude Black History Month and a great cultural education for many of us.
District Update
Last Friday, I toured Angel House, a residential facility in Mason for pregnant and parenting teen girls in foster care. The mission of this Child and Family Charities program is to help young mothers become nurturing parents and productive community members. In addition to providing a safe, comfortable home, Angel House offers therapy, access to medical care and the opportunity to improve life and parenting skills. It is one of only two programs of its kind in Michigan.
Thank you to everyone who came out to our coffee hour on Monday at the South Lansing Library! If you didn’t get a chance to come join me, I hope you can make it to my next Coffee and Conversation event on Monday, March 9, 10 – 11 a.m., at the Sam Corey Senior Center in Holt.
We are still taking submissions for our 67th House District Awards!
If you know of a young person in the district who deserves to be recognized for going the extra mile to make our community a better place, please nominate them using the form here.
If you own or know of a business in the 67th House District that deserves to be recognized for making our community a better place, please nominate them for recognition here.
Tax Season
Tax season has arrived! If you would like a copy of the State of Michigan’s Taxpayer’s Guide for the 2019 Tax Year or the Top 10 Questions to Ask a Tax Preparer, you can find them at government buildings throughout the district. I would also be happy to mail the booklets to you, or you can stop by in person during business hours and pick the publications up.
Sincerely, Kara (517) 373-0587 Facebook: @RepHope Twitter: @KaraHope67
