Upcoming Event: Your Right to Vote Town Hall

I am honored to join special guests Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum and a panel of experts and advocates for a discussion on elections, democracy and your right to vote. This town hall will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 6-7 p.m. at the Ingham County Human Services Building. Please email KaraHope@house.mi.gov with any questions or specific topics you would like covered during the town hall.

Legislators Tour Burcham Community Solar Project

Yesterday, I toured the Burcham Park Community Solar Project in East Lansing. This solar farm, built on a repurposed capped landfill, includes 1,000 solar panels and produces enough energy to power 40 homes. Under this program, East Lansing residents can sign a 25-year lease on a solar panel for $400. In return, they receive a credit on their electric bill for the energy the panels produce. This allows energy consumers to support and benefit from solar energy without having to install panels on their own property. Removing barriers to clean energy is crucial for widespread use. It is exciting to see a program like this working right here in Ingham County.

Committee Hears Testimony on Bill to Prohibit Employer Vaccine Mandates

Last week, the House Workforce, Trades, and Talent Committee heard testimony on House Bill 4471, which would prohibit employers from requiring their employees to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. I oppose this bill. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against the spread of COVID-19, and employers should be able to protect their employees, customers and business interests. Employers are already required to accommodate individuals whose religious beliefs or medical conditions do not allow for them to receive the vaccine.

Federal UIA Programs Ending Soon

Federal unemployment programs, such as PUA, PEUC, PUC and MEUC, end on Sept. 4, 2021. All protests and adjudications pending as of Sept. 4 will continue through the process, and benefits will be paid to claimants who are determined to be eligible. Find more information and schedule an appointment with the Unemployment Insurance Agency at Michigan.gov/UIA.
