LANSING, Mich., Oct. 6, 2021 — Michigan House Republicans introduced a resolution today calling on interim Unemployment Insurance Agency Director Liza Estlund Olson to resign. In response, House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) issued the following statement:
“House Democrats agree that UIA has problems that must be resolved, but we seem to fundamentally disagree with Republicans about what caused those problems and our path forward. The challenges our unemployment system has faced over the past year are not the failure of one singular person; they are the results of years of defunding a vital agency and stripping it down to the bones until it could no longer bear the weight of a crisis like COVID-19. This short-sighted approach undertaken during the Snyder administration, and over the past year, we reaped what they had sown. Choosing a public scapegoat does nothing to provide the resources our unemployment agency truly needs to support Michigan workers during tough times. Unfortunately, Republicans have consistently shot down every proposal to properly fund the agency and would prefer to point fingers.”
