BELLEVILLE, Mich., Nov. 24, 2021 — On Dec. 1, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a virtual public information meeting followed by a public hearing to discuss the draft approval of proposed changes to Belleville’s hazardous waste landfill. Residents will hear from EGLE and EPA staff and have the opportunity to submit statements regarding the draft approval. In response to the announcement, state Rep. Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) issued the following statement:
“Decisions of this caliber should only be made with input from the community it ultimately affects. Rather than go it alone, I’m glad to see EGLE and the EPA bring our community members into the discussion. Because the health and safety of our community comes first, we need to ensure that any potential change to the landfill design keeps our air and water clean. Regardless of your particular stance, I urge everyone to attend and make your voice heard on this very important matter.”
Those interested in attending can visit Michigan.gov/USEcologyWDI for the application, additional site information and access to the meeting link. Those interested in attending may preregister or join at the time of the meeting. To join by phone only, call (636) 651-3142 and use conference code 374288.
