LANSING, Mich., Dec. 2, 2021 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives voted on an appropriations bill, which will provide millions in funding for law enforcement. House Bill 5522 allocates over $300 million in federal and state funds to first responders across Michigan. The bill includes funding for body cameras, school resource officers and new incentives to encourage people to pursue a career in law enforcement. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit) introduced an amendment that was adopted in committee. It allocates funds to reduce gun case backlogs, invest in more body cameras, and ensure that the legislation complies with federal law. The legislation passed by an overwhelming margin with bipartisan support. In response, Thanedar issued the following statement:
“Our communities have had to deal with rising crime rates and fewer resources. I was proud to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address these pressing issues. My amendment will help reduce the backlog in gun-related crimes so we can get illegal guns off the streets. This legislation will provide police departments with much-needed resources and help to keep our neighborhoods and communities safe.”
