LANSING, Mich., Jan. 27, 2022 — This week, General Motors announced a $7 billion investment in electric vehicle manufacturing in Michigan, including the construction of a new electric vehicle battery plant in Delta Township and a $4 billion investment in its Orion assembly plant that will together create 4,000 jobs. Both projects are part of GM’s effort to shift to 100% electric vehicle production by 2035. State Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) issued the following statement celebrating the news:
“GM’s historic announcement to invest $7 billion in four battery plants in lower Michigan will benefit our region tremendously. The Marquette Iron Range has a long history of supplying Michigan’s car and manufacturing industry, and the development of new factories down state means continued demand for the raw materials we produce in the Upper Peninsula. This is great news for our labor force and the high-paying mining jobs we have. It also helps our contractual labor and businesses that supply our mines who benefit from the auto industry staying in Michigan and the Midwest. New economic opportunities will no doubt arise from GM’s investments, and I look forward to the U.P. being an active partner in their success for decades to come.”
