Hope to see you there! Policy Update Teaching Students Cursive In February I will be re-introducing my cursive writing bill. I believe it is important for all students to learn how to write in cursive. Many kids today are not even able to sign their own names! This bill was so close to passage in the previous session. It passed out of the House unanimously but ran out of time in the Senate. I have high hopes that this bill will be signed into law this year! Reforming the Child Protective Services Central Registry House Bill 5278 is on track to be my third Public Act! My bill, along with a number of other bills in the package, passed out of the House and are headed over to the Senate. If signed by Gov. Whitmer, these bills would reform the Child Protective Services Central Registry, making Michigan a safer and fairer place to live and work. Talent Development Coalition It was a year in the making, but I am proud to be able to award the Talent Development Coalition with a $200,000 grant for career navigation! As a former journeyman machine repair machinist, I know the value of teaching our children trades. I am so happy to be able to support Carlton Jones, Pastor Douglas Jones, Teresa Rodges and the many others that work with this wonderful program.
Oakland University Martin Luther King Jr. Event It was a pleasure to join Oakland University at their Martin Luther King Jr. Day event! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was a visionary leader, inspiring orator and agent of social change In his too-short life, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had many roles, all worthy of remembrance. But HE wanted to be remembered for serving others. While his work may never be done, I am proud to be in Lansing fighting for his ideals each and every day.
National Conference of Insurance Legislators Appointment I am honored to serve as the vice chair of the Joint State-Federal Relations and International Insurance Issues Committee for NCOIL. As Democratic vice chair of the Michigan House Insurance Committee, I understand the intricacies of insurance and the importance of fixing existing gaps in insurance laws. I am excited to use the knowledge I’ve accumulated to get to work for the people of Michigan and people throughout the country.
