LANSING, Mich., March 1, 2022 — The Michigan House of Representatives voted for Senate Bill 768 today, legislation that would lower the income tax rate to 3.9% from its current rate of 4.25%. State Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit), who voted against the bill, issued the following response:
“Contrary to what some will say, this so-called tax cut would give the bottom 20% of income earners a $12 cut, while the top 1% receive a $4,900 cut. I will not vote for a bill that does not help the people of Michigan struggling to make ends meet so the top 1% can add more money to their collection. Now, I hope my colleagues will join me to fight for real tax cuts that will put money back into the people’s pockets.”
