LANSING, Mich., March 3, 2022 — Yesterday, the lawyers representing the U.S. House select committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol filed a brief in which Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock is quoted as saying she “fought to seat” false electors after the 2020 presidential election because “the Trump campaign asked us to do that” in service to what is now alleged to be ‘criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States’. In response to mounting evidence of that conspiracy, including the highest ranks of the Trump administration and the current Michigan Republican Party, House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) issued the following statement:
“We have known from the very outset of this investigation that Michigan Republicans played a prominent role in the former president’s scheming to subvert democracy and steal the 2020 election for himself. It is frankly sickening to see the current co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party cited in this court filing demonstrating criminal conspiracy. The aiding of grave crimes against American democracy and the sovereignty of American citizens is why House Democrats introduced a resolution calling for a bipartisan committee to investigate the involvement of Michiganders in the January 6th attack on the Capitol. In Michigan, and America, we pride ourselves on a government by the people, and it is inexcusable that a political party would so insidiously work to steal that right.”
