LANSING, Mich., March 23, 2022 — State Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy) and other members of the House Democratic Caucus wrote an open letter to the House Appropriations Committee, urging members to consider increased infrastructure investment. In the letter, Democrats asked the chair of the committee, state Rep. Thomas Albert (R-Lowell), to join their calls for more infrastructure funding and outlined the various costs that Michigan drivers continue to face due to poor road quality. Kuppa issued the following statement:
“Michigan has similar weather to our neighboring states, yet we spend less money per person on road maintenance than any of them. The problem isn’t the weather: It’s our inability to prioritize our infrastructure. Stop-gap methods have been utilized for far too long to patch a few potholes without addressing the long-term road concerns. We must prioritize our infrastructure in the budget to ensure it’s cost-effective in the long run and built to last.”
