The bipartisan bill-package helps Michigan airports crack down on drug traffickers.
LANSING, Mich., May 18, 2022 — Today, the Michigan Senate passed a bipartisan package of bills to help Michigan crack down on major drug trafficking coming through Michigan airports.
“Far too many Michiganders have lost their lives because of drug addictions. As legislators, we must do everything we can to prevent drugs from getting on the streets,” said state Rep. Alex Garza (D-Taylor), sponsor of House Bill 4632 in the package. “This package stops major drug trafficking rings from profiting off the lives of others before they can impact the lives of other Michiganders — making our state a better and safer state to live in. I’m proud it is one step closer to becoming law.”
House Bills 4631-32 would allow airport authorities to execute the civil asset forfeiture process without first obtaining a conviction or plea if the property or currency relating to a drug offense exceeds $20,000. A civil judgment would still have to be obtained.
The bills now head to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk.
