LANSING, Mich., May 19, 2022 — The House of Representatives voted today in favor of a plan to provide tax relief for Michiganders by cutting $2.7 billion in income and property taxes. The plan would lower the income tax rate from 4.25% to 4%, raise the personal exemption on income taxes, add a new $500 per child tax credit and expand the earned income tax credit (EITC). State Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek) issued the following statement in support of the tax cuts:
“I voted to support a tax cut proposal for the hard-working families, children and seniors of Calhoun County. The folks I know are struggling daily with the higher costs of a gallon of gas and other goods brought on by a war in Europe as well as an unexpectedly strong recovery from the COVID pandemic in the past year. I’m optimistic about the economy we’re building under the leadership of President Biden and Gov. Whitmer. I’m also hopeful the Legislature can come together to work out a budget — in consultation with the governor — that continues to invest in kids while identifying sustainable funding for critical infrastructure like roads, bridges and clean water. If we can do that, we will have completed an important and monumental task.”
