Legislation would have funneled public education funding to private businesses
LANSING, Mich., June 8, 2022 — The Michigan House of Representatives voted down House Bill 5859, which would have taken public taxpayer money and given it to private businesses to establish a marketplace to combat learning loss. The vote came after state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) spoke on the House floor against the bill. Carter issued the following statement in response:
“We know our public schools deliver stronger educational outcomes than the private vendors this legislation supports. The focus of our plan should be the educational enrichment of our students, not the financial enrichment of private businesses. I’m glad that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle didn’t fall for this scheme to divert taxpayer dollars away from our kids, and I look forward to working on better ways to support our students.”
