LANSING, Mich., June 8, 2022 — During today’s Michigan House of Representatives session, Republican lawmakers attempted to bring bills to the floor that would allow Michiganders to carry a concealed pistol without a license. State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac), co-chair of the Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus, responded with the following statement:
“It is simply unconscionable that while families of victims from Uvalde, Texas, are still burying their loved ones, lawmakers are trying to spread more guns into our society. The process for obtaining a concealed pistol license ensures that guns don’t end up in the hands of convicted criminals, and it helps law-abiding citizens learn how to handle firearms safely and responsibly. When families across Michigan and the country are asking leaders for sensible gun laws, it is beyond extreme that some people in this chamber would want to put firearms into unscreened and untested hands.”
