Dear Neighbor,
Here is some information that I hope you will find helpful, including some updates and news from your state government.
Bill to Help Apprehend Fugitives Passes Legislature
Law enforcement will soon have another tool to use in apprehending jail escapees and other fugitives. This week, the Michigan Senate passed House Bill 4173, which is a bill I sponsored to remove the cap on the amount a county can offer as a reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a wanted suspect or an escapee from jail or prison. The current law, Public Act 175 of 1927, caps the maximum amount a county can offer at $2,000.
The amount of money that counties can offer as a reward has not changed in nearly 100 years. Higher reward amounts can lead to better information and getting dangerous people off the streets. It’s past time that we give counties this tool to encourage reluctant witnesses to come forward. HB 4173 now awaits the governor’s signature.
Bill Would Provide ‘Fair Chance’ at Housing for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals
Yesterday, I spoke in support of the Fair Chance Access to Housing Act, which would prevent landlords from inquiring about most criminal histories on rental applications. This legislation would help formerly incarcerated individuals (who have not been convicted of sex offenses) get a fair chance at housing. Housing provides the stability needed for individuals to successfully hold a job or go to school. Housing also helps keep families together and reduce the likelihood of the formerly incarcerated person to re-offend.
Eligible Families to Receive More Food Assistance this Month
Michigan families who are eligible for food assistance benefits will receive an additional $95 payment in June. Eligible households should have seen the additional benefits loaded onto their Bridge Cards last week. More information can be found at michigan.gov/MIBridges.
Scholarship Provides College Funds for Current and Former Foster Youth
Young adults who have experienced foster care at age 13 or older are eligible to apply for the Fostering Futures Scholarship. Eligible individuals who are enrolled in a Michigan degree-granting college or university can apply to receive scholarship funds for tuition, fees, room, board, books and supplies. The application deadline is Aug. 1. More information can be found at fosteringfutures-mi.com.
Michigan Officially Observes Juneteenth for First Time
In honor of Juneteenth, state of Michigan offices, including legislative offices, will be closed on Monday, June 20. Juneteenth (actually June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the United States in 1865 and celebrates the contributions and culture of African-Americans.
While the office will be closed on Monday, please do not hesitate to call or email us. We will get back to you as soon as we can!
Happy Juneteenth. And Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandpas, uncles and other father figures who work hard to care for their families.
Sincerely,
Kara Hope
State Representative
