LANSING, Mich., Sept. 7, 2022 — Michigan Court of Claims Judge Elizabeth Gleicher ruled today that the 1931 abortion ban is unconstitutional. House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) issued the following statement:
“The 1931 abortion ban is absolutely unconstitutional, as House Democrats have said time and again, and we’re grateful the Michigan Court of Claims has come to this obvious conclusion. We have been fighting against Lansing Republicans to repeal this archaic, 90-year-old law at every opportunity in the House of Representatives because it is a cruel and brutal governmental invasion against women and doctors, and an immensely unpopular law, but also because we absolutely knew this law was an unconstitutional trampling of the rights of Michiganders. While this is not likely to be the final court determination in the state, the House of Representatives could end the debate right now by simply repealing the 1931 abortion ban as Democrats have tried many times against the relentless Republican defense of this law.”
