Lansing, Mich., Oct. 7, 2022 — On Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Michigan House of Representatives passed supplemental spending legislation that prioritizes investments in economic development and business, education, mental health care, and infrastructure. State Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“I’m proud to support funding that invests in our state’s long-term wellbeing, giving Michigan a competitive edge when it comes to economic development and granting our communities the funds they need to continue to grow and expand existing programs and services. With this budget, I was able to secure $1.5 million for the Islamic Center of Detroit to allow them to continue to expand their mental health services throughout the city of Detroit and surrounding areas. I was also able to obtain $2 million for the city of Dearborn, as well as $6 million for Dearborn community pools to allow them to expand and improve upon their programming. Organizations like these offer truly enriching services to the community, and I’m glad to support their continued growth. I’m happy to vote ‘yes’ on this legislation that puts Michigan first and grants the people of my community the resources they need to thrive.”
