LANSING, Mich., Jan 13, 2023 — Following Wednesday’s swearing-in of the 102nd Legislature for the 2023-24 term, state Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing) was named chair of the House Elections Committee.
“Throughout my career, I’ve worked hard to expand voting access, and I can’t wait to make an even bigger impact as state representative,” Tsernoglou said. “As chair, I’m committed to working to ensure every Michigander’s voice is heard at the ballot box.”
Tsernoglou also plans to focus on working closely with county, municipal and township clerks, and election workers to ensure they have the resources they need to run fair, efficient elections. She’s also focusing on implementing 2022’s Proposal 2, making voting easier for college students, young people, the elderly, and rural voters, and increasing transparency and accountability.
Tsernoglou will also serve on the Criminal Justice and Judiciary committees, and the Economic Development and Small Business Committee’s Housing Subcommittee.
Tsernoglou is serving her first term representing the 75th House District, which sits at the intersection of Clinton, Ingham and Shiawassee Counties. Before being elected state representative, Tsernoglou, worked as a victims advocate for Lansing’s End Violent Encounters (EVE), a defense attorney representing indigent defendants and juveniles, an Ingham County Commissioner, and small business owner.
