WYANDOTTE, Mich., Feb. 14, 2023 — A mass shooting took place on the Michigan State University campus beginning around 8:20 p.m. last night. Campus police have confirmed that three students were killed and five remain in critical condition at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Names of the victims are expected to be released later today. The shooting triggered a manhunt that continued for hours, ending with the gunman dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooter has no apparent link to the university, and his motive is still unknown. The investigation is ongoing. State Rep. Jaime Churches (D-Wyandotte) issued the following statement on the horrific shooting:
“I am outraged that we are yet again responding to a horrific event involving an active shooter on a school campus.
“My heart goes out to the entire MSU community: students, faculty, staff, families and first responders. And while we grieve the collective trauma and loss that MSU has suffered, we must also take immediate action on gun reform.
“Universal background checks, safe storage laws and red flag laws are just a few pieces of legislation that can help address this issue.
“As an educator, I am thinking about all the parents, teachers and caregivers who had to wake up this morning and have a conversation with their children about another school shooting. It is senseless and deeply infuriating that we do not have a better response for our children — that we simply do not have a solution yet to the real issue here: guns.
“I am ready to work with my colleagues to make gun reform a top priority in Michigan. The conversation is about keeping our children, our families, and our communities healthy and safe. Know I will do everything in my power to take action and address gun violence immediately.
“I will not look away.”
