LANSING, Mich., April 27, 2023 — The Michigan Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass House Bill 4199 today. The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Township), would amend the Michigan National Guard Tuition Assistance Act to allow eligible National Guard members to transfer their Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program benefits to an eligible spouse and/or dependent. Currently, the National Guard Tuition Assistance Program helps only eligible members of the Michigan National Guard pay for vocational or technical training, a certificate, or their first associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree. Conlin issued the following statement on the bill’s passage:
“Our National Guard service members and their families make countless sacrifices for us. I’m extremely pleased to see such strong support for expanding tuition assistance to members of veterans’ families. This is a tangible way that we, as a state, can show our appreciation for the National Guard and the valuable services they perform.”
