LANSING, Mich., May 11, 2023 — The House of Representatives passed their 2023-24 budget yesterday. It includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history and substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, infrastructure, and public safety. State Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mount Clemens) issued the following statement in response to this budget:
“I can’t express enough the importance of the proposed budget’s public safety wins. It is important that we continue to support our police officers and their educational training — the people depend on it. The House proposed $9 million for a new trooper school — this opportunity will surely generate interest among potential candidate recruits and serve to provide proper training for our future police officers.
“Also, almost $5 million will be allocated in the General Government budget for local public safety initiatives. With these funds, local governments will have the ability to crack down on crime and have the means to promote and monitor community safety. With my 10 years of experience on the Mount Clemens City Commission, I know just how vital these funds are for Michigan local governments.”
