Legislation extends binding arbitration to county sheriff’s employees
LANSING, Mich., May 16, 2023 — State Rep. Kelly Breen (D-Novi) applauded the movement of her bill, House Bill 4438, out of the House Criminal Justice Committee. The legislation allows county sheriff’s deputies working as corrections officers to access binding arbitration to solve labor disputes.
“Police officers, firefighters and other first responders across Michigan have taken advantage of binding arbitration for more than 50 years,” Breen said. “These brave individuals have our back, and it’s time for us to have theirs. I’m proud to see this bipartisan package of bills move forward, and I’m looking forward to these bills getting signed into law.”
State Rep. Bob Bezotte (R-Marion Township) sponsored HB 4439, a companion bill that makes technical changes to Public Act 312 of 1969, the statute that authorizes binding arbitration. The bills now move to the House floor.
