Hello Friends,
May is quickly coming to an end, and summer is almost here! Memorial Day is next Monday, May 29. Memorial Day is a great day in the year and is a long weekend to enjoy time with friends and family, but the holiday has a deeper meaning. It is a time to commemorate those who lost their lives while serving in the American armed forces. I hope that everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend while honoring those who paid the ultimate price.
As always, if our office can ever assist you, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Budget Update
My colleagues and I have been working hard this month to finalize a fiscal 2023-24 budget. On May 10, the House passed a historic $80.1 billion budget proposal that delivers for all Michiganders and their communities.
This budget includes $21.5 billion for School Aid, the largest funding ever for Michigan schools. This budget proposes specific investments that make our schools more equitable: funding for school safety, student mental health, bus transportation and free meals for all students.
In addition to education, this budget proposal also makes historic investments in workforce retention, infrastructure and roads, public safety, environmental protections and more.
Budget negotiations between the House and Senate are currently ongoing. The final budget is anticipated to be agreed upon and passed within the next month.
I would like to take a moment to thank those individuals who have reached out to my office to share thoughts, concerns and priorities on this year’s budget. Your opinions and experiences are such an important part of crafting a budget, and I and my colleagues appreciate you doing your part.
It is often said that a budget is a statement of our priorities. And I am excited for the coming weeks as we work to finalize a spending plan that will lift up the lives of all Michiganders.
Filter First Passes Out of House Committee on Health Policy
Last week, I was proud to see my bipartisan “Filter First” legislation passed favorably out of the House Committee on Health Policy (HB 4340, 4341 and 4342).
Filter First would require filtered drinking water stations to be installed in all schools and child care centers. The bills would also create a fund with money provided by the state to help cover the cost of installation. These bills were introduced last session and passed out of the Senate with bipartisan support, but unfortunately did not make it through the House before the end of the term.
No amount of lead exposure is safe for children. Filter First ensures our kids have safe, clean drinking water. Filter First legislation will make crucial progress towards providing free, clean water to Michiganders, and I am proud to be a part of this bill package.
I am looking forward to Filter First passing on the House floor soon.
WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO
APA Day at the Capitol
I had a great time last week at the annual APA Legislative Day, recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It was a pleasure to join my colleagues in the Asian American Pacific Islander Caucus, as well as numerous individuals from all over the state, to celebrate the leadership of Asian American and Pacific Islander trailblazers. Thank you to all who made it such a successful event!
