LANSING, Mich., June 28, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed the state’s fiscal 2023-24 budget today. It includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history, including record per-pupil funding and affordable pre-K for all, as well as substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure and public safety. In response to the budget vote, state Rep. Nate Shannon (D- Sterling Height), chair of the House Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure committee, issued the following statement:
“The budget sets the tone for the upcoming year. Every priority of mine — transportation, education, public safety and funding to our local governments — was accounted for in HB 4473. These investments will continue to move Michigan forward. An increase of over $22 million was allocated for highway maintenance, which will continue to manage and support already created infrastructure. On the other hand, about $47 million of additional funding will be allocated to the Environmental Steward provision, paving the way for the most innovative, cost-effective, environmentally friendly solutions. These investments all around strengthen Michigan infrastructure and mobility — by addressing both the old and the new.”
