YPSILANTI, Mich., June 30, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed the state’s fiscal 2023-24 budget this week. This is the first budget in 40 years crafted by a Democratic trifecta — it reflects Michigan’s values by making the largest investment in education in the state’s history, including free breakfast and lunch for every public school student and affordable pre-K, as well as substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure, and public safety. The legislators worked in a bipartisan fashion to deliver a timely, responsible budget that ensures federal funding stays in Michigan instead of being sent back to Washington, D.C. State Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr. (D-Ypsilanti) issued the following statement applauding the budget:
“My colleagues and I made big promises in our first six months this session, and those promises resulted in one of the most impactful budgets in Michigan history. As the chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Judiciary, I know just how much time and effort went into creating and finalizing this budget, and I’m honored to have been a part of it. I’m most proud, though, of the vital funding coming to House District 32 — specifically the $15 million allocation for the Eastern Washtenaw Community and Recreation Center in partnership with YMCA. The investments from this budget, especially those for our district, will be felt for generations to come.”
Rep. Wilson, Jr. helped secure the following district investments:
- $15 million for the Eastern Washtenaw Community and Recreation Center in partnership with YMCA.
- $5 million for 14B District Court for renovations of existing structures to facilitate security enhancements, public safety, accessibility and efficiency of the court.
- $200,000 for Rutherford Pool in Ypsilanti City.
- $200,000 for Ypsilanti Housing Commission for the construction of a youth gaming space.
