Chevrolet Traverse Reveal

This week, I was invited to speak at General Motors’ unveiling of the new Chevrolet Traverse. Delta Township is the home of the Traverse, having made more than 1.65 million since 2009. It has the honor of being one of the top 10 SUVs on the market.

Our district has more than 5,000 GM employees and retirees, and I could not be more excited for GM to unveil its new Traverse model right here in Delta Township. This announcement is a sign that GM is making a long-term investment in manufacturing in Delta Township and the greater Lansing area. This means greater support for the great-paying manufacturing jobs our state has secured in recent years.

I was proud to vote for the initial investment that helped make the new GM plant possible and will continue to fight to bring more manufacturing jobs to Michigan. The unveiling is another indication that our state is on the right path and has a bright future.

Road Closure Notice

Stine Road will be closed under I-69 in Charlotte for rebuilding on Wednesday as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s three-year, $210 million project to rebuild I-69 between Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County, and I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County. Construction will take place from July 19 to Aug. 18.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support nearly 2,541 jobs. These improvements will provide increased safety and mobility in this area of I-69, which is a significant local and national trade corridor.

Funding for this project is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan Program, which aims to rebuild the highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer use and improve the condition of the state’s infrastructure.

General Update

Michigan Association of Health Plans Panel (MAHP)

I had the pleasure of being one of the featured panelists at this year’s MAHP Summer Conference. We discussed health care in Michigan, how to lower prescription medication costs and solutions for patients.

Vet Fest

VETLIFE, the largest veteran event in the state of Michigan, is celebrating its sixth annual Vet Fest. Vet Fest draws over 3,000 veterans annually along with their immediate family members. The purpose of Vet Fest is to bring veterans together to enjoy camaraderie and connect them to the benefits they earned through military service.

The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. To register for Vet Fest visit: bit.ly/vetfest23.

Legislative Update

State Budget Passes

The Michigan House of Representatives passed its 2023-24 budget on June 28. The School Aid budget expands access to affordable preschool and provides free breakfast and lunch to every public school student. It also includes robust support for at-risk youth, mental health services, before- and after-school programs and so much more.

The state budget puts unspent dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act to work repairing roads, bridges, and water infrastructure throughout the entire state to ensure that money is used in Michigan instead of being sent back to the federal government. This budget prioritizes the health of Michiganders through increasing wages for direct care workers, incentives to expand our behavioral health care workforce and so much more. We included substantial support for public safety, helping us graduate dozens of Michigan State Police troopers, upgrading their resources, and addressing gun case backlogs.

House District 76 will see a boost in the following areas:

  • $10 million for the Delta Waverly Senior Center.
  • $3 million for the Eaton Rapids Teen Center.
  • $1 million for the Olivet Fire Department.
  • $2 million for the Sparrow-Eaton Cancer Center.
  • $900,000 for the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office.
  • $750,000 for the Village of Dimondale.
  • $3 million to upgrade the Waverly High School Auditorium.
  • $10 million to improve Delta Township sewers.
  • $18.2 million to prepare the infrastructure necessary for a General Motors Ultium project.
  • $4 million for Future Farmers of Michigan grants.

These are just a few highlights of this incredibly exciting budget. I can’t wait to see how these investments pay off in the months, years and decades to come.
