Dear Neighbor,
It is the last month of summer, and while the weather stays warm and the kids get ready to head back to school, now is the perfect time to take a day or weekend trip to one of the many amazing sites throughout our great state! From interesting museums to magnificent natural vistas, Michigan has everything a family could want for a day out of the house.
Locally, you can visit the best art museum in the state — and one of the best in the country — the Detroit Institute of Arts. Admission is free for anyone living in Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb counties, so there is no excuse to not visit. Among other historical sites you can visit in the city is the Fisher Building, which provides free tours on Saturdays at noon and 2 p.m. Further North, outside of Detroit itself, you can go to the Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights, which made its grand reopening after years of COVID and staffing shortages. If these options don’t interest you, the Madison Heights, Hazel Park and Detroit libraries have many free or low-cost programs and provide information to events in the Detroit area!
If you want to travel outside of the area to find fun for the family, I have a few recommendations. First, you can travel to the seat of Michigan government, our state Capitol building in Lansing. Guided tours are provided from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Additionally, we have 101 state parks you can visit, offering activities such as hiking sand dunes, swimming in our Great Lakes, or camping in Michigan’s vast wilderness. A final recommendation is to visit one (or more!) of the many lighthouses Michigan has to offer. Some of the best of these are in The Thumb, just a few hours’ drive north of the district!
