Dear Friend,

We’re already eight months into the year, and while our team has been working hard in both Lansing and in the district, there is plenty ahead of us as we look forward to the fall. The Michigan Legislature is resuming session in the month of September, and our office has received a lot of inquiries about what our constituents want to see in the community and what ideas to pursue within the legislature. As we wrap up the month of August, we wanted to share some updates from around the district and upcoming events to look forward to.

Updates from the 27th

Earlier this month, state Sen. Darrin Camilleri and I presented the City of Gibraltar with $400,000 for their lead line service replacement project. This funding was secured within the FY 2023-24 budget and will be able to help replace lead lines in nearly 50 homes around Gibraltar. Not only will this project upgrade city infrastructure, but it will ensure our residents have consistent access to safe, clean drinking water.

I was honored to speak at Gov. Whitmer’s budget signing for the FY 2023-24 budget in our very own beautiful downtown Wyandotte. Our office helped to secure more than $53 million in funding for the Downriver community, and we are more than excited about these investments! This historic budget is an investment for our current Michigan residents and communities — and for many generations to come.

Sen. Camilleri, Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie and I were able to tour Trenton’s Secretary of State office this month. The tour was a great opportunity as our team was able to discuss their recent improvements, analyze how they have been effectively helping both their workers and the overall community, and see what our state officials can keep doing to help improve the services the SOS provides to all Michiganders.

Rep. Churches speaking with community members at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library.

We hosted a coffee hour at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library and spoke with community members about topics like health care affordability and accessibility, business and economic development, and keeping our environment clean and safe in the Downriver area. There were a lot of productive conversations throughout the hour, and we would like to thank our friends at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library for hosting us and Kekoa Brew Co. for providing us with some great coffee!

Churches at 3131 Biddle

Rep. Churches and federal, state and local officials joined the ‘Make It In Michigan’ tour stop to hear about the 3131 Biddle Redevelopment Project in downtown Wyandotte.

Lastly, I joined state and local officials at the “Make It In Michigan” tour stop at the 3131 Biddle Redevelopment Project in downtown Wyandotte. The project will be renovating Wyandotte’s former city hall into an updated building complex with retail, restaurants and housing. This is a great new opportunity for both new businesses and housing in the Downriver community — I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product!
