Dear Neighbor,

For the past month, my colleagues and I have been focusing on the fiscal 2023-24 budget. We were able to pass a record $82 billion, fiscally responsible budget, including the use of federal COVID dollars that were in a use-it-or-lose-it status.

I wanted to update the community on what I have been focusing on in Lansing and highlight the key budget wins were for House District 8.

What have I been working on?

There are hundreds of bills that have been introduced into the Michigan Legislature this term. Below is a list of the bills I have sponsored and co-sponsored that I am working on passing.  I am working on other bills too, and I will update you with those bills once they are introduced.

  • HB 4194 — This bill is part of a larger package of bills that will provide state IDs to returning citizens upon their release from prison.
  • HB 4707 — This bill will require health insurance to cover medically necessary treatment of a mental health or substance abuse disorder.
  • HB 4790 — This is part of a larger package of bills to replace “a man and a woman” with “two parties” in various marriage related laws in Michigan.

State Budget

Michigan’s Budget: $83 million secured for our communities

The Michigan House of Representatives passed the state’s fiscal 2023-24 budget before shifting to in-district work. The budget includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history, including free breakfast and lunch for every public school student and affordable pre-K for all, as well as substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure and public safety. I am proud to say that over $83 million of the state’s budget is coming back home to our community in House District 8, plus countless other dollars that will be spent throughout Wayne and Oakland counties. Some of the main wins in our community includes the following.

Key Wins in Education

  • $2.5 million for KEYS Academy (Hazel Park and Madison Heights).
  • $100,000 for the Hazel Park Library.

Key Wins in Cultural, Economic and Housing Development

  • $2.5 million for Vanguard Community Development (attainable housing).
  • $12 million for Midtown Cultural Center Planning Initiative Development.
  • $4 million for the Charles H. Wright Museum/Detroit Historical Society.
  • $4 million for the Detroit Historical Society.
  • $5 million for the Fisher Building Redevelopment.

Key Wins in Health Care and Mental Health

  • $2 million for Corktown Health Hazel Park.
  • $20 million for BAMF Health Facility (state-of-the-art cancer facility in Detroit).
  • $20 million for Henry Ford Health.
  • $2 million for Wayne State Perinatology and Women’s Health.
  • $500,000 for Wayne State psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • $378,600 for Wayne State Poison Control.
  • $4 million for the Levin Center at Wayne State University.

Key Wins in Oakland County, Wayne County and Greater Detroit

  • $10 million Oakland County Road Infrastructure Grant.
  • $3.5 million for Oakland County Michigan Reconnect Program.
  • $1.2 million for senior citizen home renovations in Detroit.
  • $10 million for Detroit firefighter retiree health care.
  • $100,000 for Detroit Blight Busters.
  • $1 million for Orchard Village Apartments through Detroit Blight Busters.
  • $500,000 for L!FE Leaders Workforce Development Program — Detroit.
  • $650,00 for Legal Aid Defender Association to provide expungement services in Detroit.

I am grateful to support legislation to keep Michigan moving in a positive direction. We have made great strides with our state through this budget, and I am proud to have been part of this process and to have fought for my neighbors in House District 8.
