LANSING — State Representative Bill LaVoy (D-Monroe) introduced a resolution today calling on Gov. Rick Snyder to form a governors’ commission to address toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie. Last month, toxins from a large algae bloom forced Toledo to issue a “do not drink” order for its water system. The resolution was approved unanimously.
“Communities in several states rely on Lake Erie for drinking water. It is a crucial resource that must remain safe and healthy,” LaVoy said. “It will take a concerted effort from all those states to ensure that people have access to one of life’s most important necessities.”
The resolution urges Snyder to call together the governors of New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania and the premier of Ontario to discuss the health of Lake Erie and ways to protect it.
