LANSING, Mich., Oct. 26, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bill 4346 yesterday with bipartisan support. This bill, introduced by state Rep. Kevin Coleman (D-Westland), amends the Open Meetings Act to allow a public body responsible for the investment, administration or management of a municipal public employee retirement system to meet virtually.
“COVID-19 changed how we attend meetings and go about our daily tasks. Just a few years ago, it would have been hard to believe that many companies would start allowing employees the opportunity to work remotely, but now many workplaces have hybrid and remote options for many employment positions,” Coleman said. “Why shouldn’t this apply to public meetings as well? Technology allows more accessibility for the community to view these meetings, and our laws should reflect that.”
With the House passage of this bill, it now heads to the Senate for consideration.
