LANSING, Mich., Dec. 7, 2023 — Layoffs at the Detroit Mack Assembly plant of automaker Stellantis, will impact roughly one-third of the 4,600 workers who make Jeep sport utility vehicles, just weeks after the historic strike ended. In response to the announcement, Majority Floor Leader Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck) issued the following statement:
“Layoffs, no matter when they happen, are never a good thing for dedicated workers, and to do this right after the sacrifices workers made during the historic strike is a slap in the face. This reeks of retaliation toward workers who stood up to record-breaking greed and corporate profits — profits that their labor made possible. Instead of getting back to business at the Mack plant where some of their best selling vehicles are made, instead of supporting and uplifting their workers, Stellantis decided to hand out pink slips. It’s a disgrace.”
