LANSING, Mich., Dec. 11, 2023 — The New York Times published an article yesterday about gun buyback programs and how there are certain parts that make up a gun that are destroyed and others that are sold for gun repair kits. The article discussed these policies creating a secondary gun market. The Michigan Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus issued the following statement in response:
“It is a shame that weapon parts continue to be sold for use in weapons. While these buyback programs take guns off our streets, it is obvious that there is a gap in gun buyback policy that must be addressed so we can eliminate these types of secondary sales that affect our nation as a whole. The MFSVP Caucus is dedicated to continuing to create a safer Michigan, and we will investigate these unfortunate gun rebirths and seek solutions.”
