Carter on State of the State Address
Looking forward to work on education and economy
LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered this year’s State of the State address today before a joint legislative session. In her speech, the governor discussed her agenda for the new term, which includes lowering costs for Michiganders, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the state’s economy. State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement on Whitmer’s address:
“Investing more in education, lowering costs and expanding the economy are all essential aspects Michiganders need to make their dreams and ends meet. Living in poverty has profound trauma on individuals. If we can lift people out of poverty and prevent others from slipping through the cracks, we can help Michiganders who need it the most. Making it in Michigan isn’t just for a select few — making it in Michigan is for everyone.”
Over the last year, lawmakers have laid a foundation for Michigan by putting people first. The fundamental building blocks include repealing the retirement tax, increasing the working families tax credit (EITC), funding free breakfast and lunch to public school kids, improving public safety and so much more. With efforts including lowering prescription costs, bolstering our economy and ensuring Michigan is a healthy and desirable state to live and work in, work will continue for the brightest future for all Michiganders.
