Lawmaker glad Governor shares priorities on housing, jobs

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 — Before a joint Legislative session today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered this year’s State of the State address. In her speech, the governor discussed her agenda for the new term, which includes lowering costs for Michiganders, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the state’s economy. State Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) issued the following statement on Whitmer’s address:
“I’m encouraged to hear the governor speak on shared priorities like making housing affordable, supporting education, creating jobs and keeping hard-earned dollars in the pockets of our working families. Last year, we took major steps to bolster the U.P.’s economy with new infrastructure and business opportunities. While there’s still work to be done, I’m confident that our communities will prosper.”
Over the last year, lawmakers have laid a foundation for Michigan by putting people first. The fundamental building blocks include repealing the retirement tax, increasing the working families tax credit (EITC), funding free breakfast and lunch to public school kids, improving public safety and so much more. With efforts including lowering prescription costs, bolstering our economy and ensuring Michigan is a healthy and desirable state to live and work in, work will continue for the brightest future for all Michiganders.
