LANSING – State Representative LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit) made history today as the first legislator to hold a Skype teleconference from a session of the Michigan House of Representatives. The teleconference was part of Career Day at Highland Park Renaissance Academy.
“With the technological advances we’re surrounded by, it only made sense to give kids a chance to see what happens in the House, even if they couldn’t be here physically,” Garrett said. “It was an amazing experience both for myself and the students, and I hope this can open up doors in the future for more long-distance learning opportunities.”
Rep. Garrett gave the group of 30 students a virtual tour of the House Floor and encouraged them to keep striving to be outstanding students. She told them, “Education is very important to your future. Make sure you remain focused on doing your best in school.”
Reps. Rose Mary Robinson (D-Detroit), Alberta Tinsley Talabi (D-Detroit), Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit), Harvey Santana (D-Detroit), Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), House Minority Floor Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing), and House Minority Leader Tim Greimel (D-Auburn Hills) also joined to share words of wisdom for the youth.
School administrator Gloria Liveoak said, “This has been the best career day ever.”
