LANSING, Mich., April 5, 2024 — State Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) celebrated Melvindale’s award of over $4 million in funding from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), a grant from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The grant will go toward updating Melvindale’s water infrastructure. In response to the news, Farhat released the following statement:
“Access to reliable and clean water is crucial for everyone. Melvindale’s water system is nearing its 80th year of operation and is in dire need of modernization. This funding represents the state’s commitment to addressing that need. My colleagues and I in Lansing have consistently prioritized modernizing infrastructure in our efforts to put people first. I am thrilled that the people of Melvindale will soon benefit from these upgrades.”
The DWSRF in Michigan is a federal-state partnership program designed to provide financial assistance to public water systems for investments in infrastructure improvements that enhance the safety and quality of drinking water. Established under the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996, the DWSRF offers low-interest loans, grants, and other forms of financial support to eligible water suppliers to fund projects such as the construction or upgrade of treatment facilities, distribution systems, and source water protection initiatives.
