Rep. Plawecki’s Resolution Honors the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

State Representative Julie Plawecki (D-Dearborn Heights) introduced House Resolution 115, commemorating the 25^th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which will occur on July 26, 2015. The ADA was a widespread, bipartisan effort, and is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation. HR 115 was adopted by the Michigan House of Representatives today.

The ADA is a landmark federal law that protects the rights of people with disabilities by eliminating barriers to their participation in many aspects of living and working in America. It is estimated by the United States Census Bureau that nearly one in five Americans live with a disability.

“The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities to participate in the mainstream of American life,” Plawecki said. “It is my honor to have sponsored this commemoration of the ADA’s 25^th Anniversary, so that all residents of this State may recognize the ADA for its accomplishments in civil rights protections and discrimination prevention.”
